Bell signals in use in 1960
Universal bell signals
These are the standard set of bell signals applicable on British Railways in 1960. The Western Region had a few variations, which are noted in the table. The Southern Region had some more drastic differences, these are listed separately. Additionally, the London Midland and Southern Regions defined a range of routing Is Line Clear? bell signals, which are also listed in a separate table.
Signalmen had to know and remember all these codes!

Bell signals used only on the Southern Region
The Southern Region used a completely different set of Is Line Clear bell signals, residue from Southern Railway days. There was less variation between classes of trains, but a duplicate set of bell codes was provided for use at diverging junctions to identify the train’s routing.

London Midland Region routing bell codes
Special bell signals were used in many places, under local instructions, to assist signalmen at junctions in routing trains. The London Midland Region issued a standard set of Is Line Clear? bell signals for such use, but their use still had to be authorised under local instructions.

Special Train Entering Section (commonly 2-2-2, 2-2-4, 2-4-3) and Train Approaching (commonly 1-1-2, 1-1-4 and 1-1-5) bell codes were also used, but these were defined locally and did not consistently relate to a specific set of codes as listed above.
Southern Region routing bell codes
The Southern Region also issued a standard set of Is Line Clear? bell signals for use in identifying the route of the trains. Again, these were only allowed to be used where specially authorised.
The list shown here dates from 1972, after the standard codes had been brought in line with the other Regions of British Railways.
