This box replaced a much smaller previous box at this level crossing near Wetheral. It is actually a new operating floor fitted upon the original base, which has been lengthened by approximately 100%.
As such, the box cannot really be classed as a standard design, but it embodies many features of contemporary structures.
One feature that almost certainly dates back to the old box is the letter box in the end of the locking room.
The level crossing is controlled by a pair of electrically-operated lifting barriers which operate simultaneously – this short film shows that, unusually, no bells, sirens or lights are provided to indicate the lowering of the barriers.

The signal box remains in use at the time of writing (2020).
