After the Whitehaven, Cleator & Egremont Railway sold out to the London & North Western Railway in 1877 all new boxes were built to LNW designs. The operation become joint with the Furness Railway in 1878, and they took responsibility for electrical equipment leaving the LNW to deal with the mechanical side of things.

Moor Row No1 was late on the scene, replacing an earlier box in 1913. This view shows it to be to the LNW’s 1904 design with the taller window sections. Most were built with brick bases, but this is an all-timber version owing to its being built (as can be seen) on an embankment.

This inside view shows it to have been provided with a contemporary LNW tappet frame, which contained 45 levers. This contrasted with some of the earlier examples which had been provided with frames by Saxby & Farmer or the Railway Signal Company – probably LNW and FR influence respectively.

Of considerable interest are the two block instruments visible on the instrument shelf. The left-hand of the pair is a Tyer & Co one-wire, three-position instrument as used throughout the Furness Railway network, but on the right is a rare Tyer & Co one-wire, three-position, non-sequential block. The line through to Corkickle at Whitehaven used these instruments.

The signal box closed on 24th October 1963.
