Elevated revolving disc signal

Elevated revolving disc signal

The Highland Railway differed from the other Scottish pre-grouping companies by favouring McKenzie & Holland as its main signalling contractor - the others all used Stevens & Sons.

This revolving disc signal, reading from the Locomotive Shed to Down Main is indeed of McKenzie & Holland manufacture, although to improve its prominence it has been elevated on a cast-iron post, which effectively acts as a spacer between the standard base mechanism and the signal. The signal is rotated by a shaft running up the centre of the post.

The signal survived right up to the 1987 resignalling of the Inverness area.
