I’ve been flicking through my John swift covering Sheffield and Rotherham etc and I’m confused about the arrangements in place at Frickley colliery and moorthorpe South boxes. Both have a gantry however it’s unclear how the signals apply to various roads, mainly because there are more possible routes than signal heads. Of course its possible all the lines involved weren’t signalled but that seems like a strange arrangement.

I can’t share a copy of the diagrams due to copyright but the signals are moorthorpe South 10,18,16 and 25 and frickley colliery 24, 25,9,10 and 15.

      Any help appreciated.

I have put some diagrams on the site showing the arrangements at 1908:
        Moorthorpe South: https://signalbox.org/~SBdiagram.php?id=%201270
        Frickley Colliery Sidings: https://signalbox.org/~SBdiagram.php?id=%201271

You will see there are no over-line gantries – the nearest thing that could be considered as a gantry is a five-doll bracket which has been provided with two posts, typical in those days to give wooden post signals some strength.

Hopefully all the routes will make sense now, but if anything doesn’t, shout!

        Best regards,

        John

Brilliant thanks for that. The Diagrams you’ve provided have much better clarity. I’d assumed the swift diagrams had drawn the gantries to the side to make things clearer but I’m glad you could confirm they’re brackets. I have to say its a very impressive array of signalling for what amounts to colliery reception/exchange sidings.

As a secondary question, I was curious that my 1972 SA shows Frickley colliery box as still being open (the next one I have is 1979 and its closed), however it also shows the colliery branch as now being OTW into a rapid loader and run round line, which is the “later” arrangement I’m more familiar with once Frickley closed and Moorthorpe South Controlled the branch entrance.

Having trawled through OS maps I can’t find a definitive answer, but presumably for a time, probably a very short time, Frickley controlled a much reduced layout prior to being abolished?
