I have recently added some photographs of a couple of signal boxes on the little-known South Shields, Marsden and Whitby Colliery Railway to the Photo Gallery section.

As with many private and industrial railways, I have few records of opening and closing dates for these boxes. Does anybody have any dating information I can add?

      Thanks in advance.

This info is out of the Oakwood Press book.

Westoe Lane was opened some time between June 1887 and Feb 1888 with a 12 lever frame. It was reframed in 1920 with a 15 lever R.S.Co “pit” frame and again in 1935 with another 15 lever frame, presumably R.S.Co also.
Lighthouse was opened in 1929 with a 25 lever R.S.Co frame and the book comments that it was virtually redundant by 1954 after the passenger service had ceased the previous year. By 1957 the ES was out of use and OES working substituted, and the signalboxes were in essence treated as covered ground frames.

I doubt that there actually was a formal closure date in the accepted railway sense but they just fell out of use as circumstances changed.

        Hope this helps

Brilliant, Martin – many thanks for that.

Looking at the photo of Westoe Lane, the platform is remarkably wide and there is what appears to be a second row of coping stones about one track width inwards from the edge which also runs on rather further into the distance. Does this suggest that some time before that photo was taken there may have been a layout change involving removal of a track nearer the buildings and necessitating widening of the platform?

Yes, the platform was widened across the original track bed – see http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/w/westoe_lane/index.shtml for details.
